These rugs are sometimes called Venetian carpet, possibly because the striped patterns are reminiscent of streaks of color in Venetian glass.  The weave is warp-faced, which means that the yarns that run the length of the fabric and show in the fringe completely cover the horizontal weft yarns.  The weave can produce narrow horizontal stripes, vertical strips of any width, and checks.  The warp is wool with a firm finish and the concealed weft is soft, bulky cotton that creates pronounced horizontal ribs in the surface.

These rugs are thick and tough enough to use on the floor. The fringe is normally twisted or braided for better wear.  The width is typically 30" - 36", and length anything you like.
